Sir:-
I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to
state, for the information of the Secretary of State
for the Colonies, that his attention has been called
to the importance of the continued use of the British
dollar in China and to the possibility of its super-
session in that country by a specially coined Mexican
Trade Dollar, and I am to transmit to you herewith
a copy of a Memorandum by Sir J. L. Mackay, G.C.M.G.,
K.C.I.E., on the subject.
His Majesty's Minister at Peking was requested
to furnish a report on the question and I am to en-
close a copy of his reply.
You will observe that both Sir E. Satow and
the leading Managers of the Hongkong and Shanghai
Bank in China, whom he has consulted in the matter,
confirm the opinion expressed in the enclosed Memo-
